JEFFREY MILLS SOLICITORS
- A Busy Time Of Year
As I write this, there are 9 weeks until Christmas day. The next 9 weeks will be a busy time for most of us. I have yet to start my Christmas shopping, both my son’s birthdays are in the next few weeks, and I am training for a half marathon at the end of November; a busy time indeed.
You can see why people put off big decisions, or things that they consider to be non-essential at this time of year.
A Fresh Start.
January can then be a busy time for a solicitors practice. Sadly, Christmas can place a lot of stress upon families and relationships can break down. Many people decide that January is the time for a fresh start, whether that is ending an unhappy relationship or moving house.
If you are considering separating from your partner, whether you are married or cohabiting, and have questions about the processes involved and what your rights may be, please make an appointment to see me for an initial consultation. The cost is £50 + vat, and you will have the opportunity to ask any
questions you may have before deciding on an appropriate course of action.
Making a Will.
One thing that can often fall to the bottom of people’s “to do” list is making a Will.
Recently I was out with some friends for dinner, and out of the 4 couples present, only 2 people had a Will. Unsurprisingly, it was me and my husband! All of my friends knew that they should have a Will, and they all said it was something they intended to do, but as people with busy lives there just always seemed to be other, more pressing things, that needed their attention.
Even if you already have a Will, it is recommended that you review it on a regular basis. Although it may seem like an unimportant issue, dying without a valid Will can cause complications and uncertainty for those left behind.
All you have to do is make an appointment to see one of the solicitors in our Wills & Probate department, at a time and office to suit you, and we will then do the rest.
What may seem like a daunting task can actually be very simple and straightforward.
During your appointment, the solicitor can also discuss with you whether you would like to grant someone a Lasting Power of Attorney, who would be able to deal with your health and welfare or property and financial affairs in your lifetime should you be unable to. This is another important issue that can be overlooked.
New Years Resolution.
If life really is simply too busy at this time of year, then make it your New Year’s Resolution to make or review your Will.
In January 2016 my New Year’s Resolution was to start running.
I am now running the London Marathon in April 2017 as part of Team Emilio (The Team Emilio facebook page) for The Neuro Foundation.
Emilio is a little boy at my sons school, who has Neurofibromatosis, NF1 for short.
Although this condition is more common than some conditions such as cystic fibrosis, it is not widely known about.
I am not a natural runner, and at first, the idea of it was ludicrous. But the more I thought about it, I realised I actually really wanted to do it. Running a marathon is nothing compared to what Emilio and his family have to deal with.
My fundraising page is http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/HannahByatt.
Next year my new years resolution will be to make sure that all of my friends and family have up to date Wills in place.
I hope this article provides you with comfort in the knowledge that when you come and see Jeffrey Mills Solicitors you are working with experts.
